Soft, strong and very long

APART from being one of the most deadly spiders in the world, the black widow has another claim to fame: it produces the strongest silk of any spider yet tested. Latrodectus mactans, a black widow found in the southern US, produces two different types of silk to form the scaffolding of its web. Both types of silk have remarkable properties. The first can extend by up to 27 per cent before breaking and is twice as strong as the previous record holder, the dragline silk made by orb web spiders such as Araneus diadematus. But the second type of silk that the black widow makes is even more extraordinary, says Anne Moore of Scripps College in Claremont, California. It extends slightly less before breaking, but has an even higher breaking strength, allowing it to absorb much more energy than Kevlar,
