THE Californian quest for healthier eating has proved the undoing of at least one woman, who caught cholera after eating seaweed. The 31-year-old became violently ill with watery diarrhoea and vomiting after eating a meal containing raw seaweed that a friend had brought back from the Philippines. This is the first incident of its kind ever reported. Tests confirmed that the woman had cholera and that the source of the infection was seaweed, doctors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and the California Department of Health report in this month’s Journal of Clinical Microbiology.
