International Atomic Energy Agency warned last week that four nuclear reactors in Bulgaria are unsafe. The agency took the unusual step of issuing a public announcement about the Kozloduy nuclear complex following a three-week inspection by engineers and scientists from the IAEA. Hans Meyer, of the IAEA, said the position of Kozloduy was ‘very serious’. All the suspect units are ageing VVER-230 pressurised water reactors. According to the agency, it is now impossible to guarantee that the reactors could be shut down safely in the event of an accident. ‘Thunder’ generates lightning responses NETWORK of lightning detectors which tracks the path of storms across the US will soon be helping such diverse industries as the weather service, telecommunications, the US strategic air command and airlines. The system was developed by the Electric Power Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, to help power generating companies to design their equipment to resist the effects of lightning strikes.
